Alas, my Phillies did not even make it into the playoffs this year. But the Los Angeles Dodgers had a great regular season, and it seemed to me a matter of time before they would reign as MLB champions.
So it took the Dodgers 6 games to finish off the Devil Rays. The Dodgers beat American League's Tampa Bay Devil Rays by a score of 3-1. The Dodgers, who took the series 4 games to 2, won for the 7th time in 32 years.
Note that the 2020 World Series was held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the home of the Texas Rangers. It was unusual because the entire World Series was played at a neutral site due to COVID restrictions. Such were the times.
It was a close game until the sixth inning, when the Dodgers tied the game on a wild pitch, and Corey Seager drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. Seager, with a batting average of .400, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs, was selected as the Most Valuable Player (MVP). The Rays' Yoshitomo Tsutsugo did not have a chance to play in this one, unfortunately for fans in Japan.
I wanted to add a few more interesting facts about this game. First of all, Blake Snell, the Rays pitcher, was pulled after 5 1/3 innings after giving up only one run! The Rays' pitching management philosophy is to not allow any of their pitchers to go through the lineup more than two times. So, when the third time came around in the 5th inning, manager Kevin Cash yanked Snell. Nick Anderson came in, and he promptly gave up 2 runs and the lead.
The second thing that I thought was interesting was that during the game, a COVID test result for the Dodgers' Justin Turner came back and was positive. When the Dodgers' manager was informed, he pulled Turner from the game. Turner was to go into quarantine at that point. But, after the Dodgers won the game, Turner celebrated with the Dodgers without wearing a mask. He apparently forced his way onto the field past the security people. Unbelievable. I wonder how many Dodgers will test positive for COVID this week.
Lastly, there were a lot of strikeouts. The Rays and Dodgers combined to strike out 27 batters in Game 6, the most ever in a nine-inning World Series Game. The previous record was 25 strikeouts done several times, most recently in Game 3 of the 2000 World Series.
